Mike joined the Firm in 1999 after practicing employment discrimination and civil rights law for six years in Washington D.C. He became a partner in 2001. In addition to his litigation practice, Mike has significant experience as an appellate advocate. He is a frequent contributor of amicus briefs in employment and other public policy cases. Mike has been repeatedly listed in the Best Lawyers in America and named a “Washington Superlawyer” every year since 2001. He also been chosen a "Top Lawyer" by Washington CEO Magazine.

Mike is a native New Yorker. He is a graduate of Yale University (B.A. History and Political Science 1987), summa cum laude, and was elected to phi beta kappa. He attended Stanford Law School, where he was a member of the law review and was graduated with honors (1990). He is a former law clerk to Judge Stephen Reinhardt of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and also clerked for Judge William Wayne Justice of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Mike began his legal career as an attorney at the ACLU of Southern California.

Mike has appeared as a television legal analyst for NBC Nightly News, CNN, MSNBC, and the Fox News Network. He has written numerous articles for national and regional legal publications, and is a frequent public speaker on legal issues. He served as a union chapter editor for BNA’s Employment Discrimination Law and is a contributor to BNA’s Wage & Hour Law and the Washington Civil Procedure Deskbook. His bar memberships include the U.S. Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit, Washington, California, and the District of Columbia. He is an active member of the Washington Employment Lawyers’ Association Amicus Committee. Mike served as co-chair of the Washington State Bar Association Civil Rights Committee (2002-03) and was a member of the Rules Committee (2003-06).

Mike lives in Seattle with his wife, Leslie Hagin, a fellow lawyer.
